Imran Khan is the former Prime Minister of Pakistan. And yet, he remains most vividly in public memory as the captain who led the Pakistan team to victory at the 1992 Cricket World Cup. The cricket legend has come a long way from sports to philanthropy to politics. Throughout this extraordinary journey, his driving force has remained the same: a desire for social justice and equality.

Shaukat Khanum Hospital was the first step and milestone. It became a testament to Imran’s resolve and a national achievement that he is proud to have spearheaded. It remains at the forefront of Imran Khan’s ongoing philanthropic works. Thanks to him, free cancer care for the poor of Pakistan became possible.

Imran Ahmed Khan Niazi was born on October 5th, 1952. One of five siblings, he was the youngest and only son of Ikramullah Khan Niazi, a civil engineer, and Shaukat Khanum.

‘My mother died of cancer. She was someone I loved the most. In her last stages, I would be with her all day and my sisters would sleep with her at night. One night she suddenly woke up in extreme pain and she was still in a semi-coma. And my sisters said, “Let’s get Imran.” But even in this state, she said, “No don’t get him. He’s tired.” How can you explain that love?’

Shaukat Khanum was a woman who was proud of her heritage. She hailed from a family of proficient cricketers, and a Sufi Warrior Poet. Hers was a pride she instilled in her children, along with an iron resolve. In February 1985, after a long and agonising struggle, Shaukat Khanum’s family lost her to cancer. She was just 63 years old.

‘I saw someone that close to me, for two months, in extreme pain. I think only people who have seen cancer patients can know how they suffer. I think that suffering touched me very deeply. It was like a watershed in my life.’

At the time, Imran had no idea that the most painful event of his life would pave the way for a hospital that continues to provide hope for millions. Today, Imran Khan is the Founding Chairman of Imran Khan Cancer Appeal and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Decades before Imran Khan went into politics, he won the hearts and trust of the nation as a cricketer and philanthropist. He founded the Imran Khan Cancer Appeal (IKCA) and Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital.

Today, Imran Khan’s cancer hospital in Lahore is seeing its 28th Ramadan. His second hospital in Peshawar is in its 8th year, and a third hospital in Karachi is nearing completion, scheduled to start receiving patients at the end of 2023. All our hospitals and medical facilities are JCI Enterprise Accredited.

‘This path that you embark on to help other people, this is the path of Allah. This is the path that Muslims ask Allah for 5 times a day when we pray. ‘Allah guide me on the path of those you have blessed.’ All we have to do is ask for this path. Whether we succeed or not, that is in Allah’s hands. Only the effort is in our hands.’

From the start, Imran was personally involved in the global fundraising effort for the project. Today, he is its Founding Chairman and is still involved in ongoing appeals and awareness campaigns, ensuring 75% of patients receive quality cancer care, free of charge.
Some of Imran’s other social and charitable endeavours are the Imran Khan Foundation and Namal Institute (part of Namal Knowledge City), a technical college in Minwali.

Imran Khan, the Politician

Imran Khan became a politician out of a desire to tackle corruption in Pakistan. He was reluctant to enter politics but concluded that to change society for the better, he would have to become politically active.

‘When you become the Prime Minister, your responsibility then becomes the people of your country and in our case, 100 million Pakistanis are vulnerable, either living below the poverty line or just above. So as a Prime Minister, that becomes my main responsibility.’

Imran Khan was the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan and is currently the Chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Party. In November 2022, Imran survived an assassination attempt at a rally in Gujranwala. The attack cost the life of one supporter and left several others wounded.

‘Farmers are not paid for their hard work. 25 million children are out of school. Our women continue to die in childbirth because we can’t give them basic healthcare. We can’t give the people clean drinking water […] A country is not recognised by the lifestyle of the rich, but by the lifestyle of the poor. No country that has an island of rich people and a sea of poor people can prosper.’

Imran Khan’s party – Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) meaning ‘Movement for Justice’ – was established in 1996. He became Prime Minister of Pakistan on the 18th of August 2018 at the Aiwan-e-Sadr in Islamabad.

As a politician, Imran continues to defend social justice and equality, as well as the importance of preserving cultural values.
